The book of Nehemiah is often tapped as a source for modeling leadership. It records the story of one cycle of restoration for the Israelites as a group, led by Nehemiah, returns to Jerusalem from Persia in 445 BC to rebuild the walls of the city to help protect the temple.
The first half of the book recounts the story of God’s provision and protection as they rebuild the walls under constant threat of attack. The second half focuses on the reestablishment of the nation on the foundation of their unique status as the people of God after extended captivity in Babylon.
